July 14, 2013: I Try Out My Galaxy

Recently, I purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 so as to have music with me when I am away from home. As I listen to my favorite pieces or pieces recommended to me by others including YouTube itself, I am looking for a place to make a list for myself, my friends for whom I wish to describe my listening, and for anyone else who may be interested. If you enjoy real music, you are getting to be a rare bird. There is a sort of bond between us – even if you don’t approve of well-worn favorites like Claire de Lune
I recorded the WKCR Tristano Marathon with Easy Hi-Q; but, nowadays, one can acquire the best digital versions on the web just by googling. What you can’t get are my personal recordings of Chris Anderson, Karen Dalton, Bob Arkin, Perry Robinson, Hod O’Brien, Lou Ornstein, Roswell Rudd, Gino Biondo, and others. Some of these old reel-to-reel tapes were made with Neumann U87 mikes! They are in the process of being edited.

Hod O’Brien

Most jazz musicians have known about Hod O’Brien for 50 years. He already played like an angel when just out of his teens. This is a home jam session that I hosted in the mid-70s at my loft in the famous 821 6th Avenue loft building where rank amateurs like me rubbed elbows with the greats of the jazz world like Thelonious Monk, Zoot Sims, and, yes, Hod O’Brien; famous composers like Hall Overton; and the spiritual presence in residence, the great photographer, W. Eugene Smith. I had helped Gene move out of this loft; and, now, after a circuitous sequence of events, I occupied the loft myself. Interested people can click on Duke University’s Jazz Loft Project at http://www.jazzloftproject.org/blog/ .
Auphonic’s post-production has improved a rather poor recording immeasurably; but, I, for one, was overburdened by my triple role as drummer, recording engineer, and host. Nevertheless, let’s listen to the second track of the CD Mark Linn made from my reel-to-reel tapes:

Lennie Tristano

The following are from a concert in Toronto in July of 1952. Al Levitt, drums; Peter Ind, bass; Lee Konitz, alto; Warne Marsh, tenor; Lennie Tristano, piano.

http:/jazzandclassical.net/real12.mp3 I have forgotten what’s on this recording. There are about 22 recordings altogether.
This is from Lennie’s trio album Manhattan Studio. Lennie, Peter Ind, and I recorded early in the morning after Peter’s Hickory House gig and my first chemical engineering job after college.
